Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled a pioneering experiment using advanced AI to craft personalized dietary and exercise recommendations based on his personal health and travel data. Sharing insights on the social media platform X, Buterin emphasized a strong focus on maintaining privacy and preventing personal data from leaking to external systems.
Hybrid Model Balances Local and Remote AI
At the heart of Buterin’s experiment lies a local AI model orchestrating the process, which strategically calls upon more powerful remote models when necessary. This hybrid framework aims to supplement the local model’s limited reasoning and information capacity while ensuring minimal data exposure.
The AI framework employs a skill file that instructs the local model on when and how to request data from remote systems with minimal disclosure. Buterin revealed his use of zkAPI wrapped with the Tor command line tool for secure communications, enhancing user privacy by routing internet traffic multilayeredly.
Commenting on the progress, Buterin stated, “The experiment works, and enhanced insights from advanced models improve recommendations, though increasing privacy can limit the contributions of remote models.”
Buterin acknowledged the functional success of the approach while noting its drawbacks. The more cautiously the system behaves by sharing less data with remote models, the more limited the assistance it receives, highlighting an ongoing tension between AI utility and privacy.
No Shift in Ethereum’s Long-Term Vision
Despite this AI-focused endeavor, Buterin’s long-term approach for Ethereum remains unchanged. He continues to envision Ethereum as a “cryptographic world computer,” reiterating the platform’s significance as a leading blockchain network for smart contracts and decentralized applications.
In an analysis shared in late September, Buterin reflected on Ethereum’s substantial evolution over the past 15 years and projected further qualitative transformation within the next three years. The anticipated future structure signifies a departure from the Ethereum known to developers from 2015.
Deeper Transformation Expected Post-Pectra
The forthcoming Pectra hard fork update, expected next year, may mark the last “normal” Ethereum update familiar to developers from 2015. Subsequent transformations are likely to focus on advanced technologies, including recursive STARK structures, automated formal verification, and quantum-secure systems.
Buterin also postulates that Ethereum is evolving beyond a mere blockchain with PeerDAS, anticipating the transformation as the central narrative post-Pectra. He suggests this future architecture will enable more affordable, scalable, and privacy-centric high-security computing.
Buterin emphasized that post-Pectra, Ethereum’s primary focus will be on evolving into a robust cryptographic computing infrastructure beyond traditional blockchain confines.
