At the close of October, significant developments on the XRP Ledger saw the amount of XRP eliminated through transaction fees spike to 1,644 units on October 30. This rise underscores a notable uptick in network activity, indicating the re-acceleration of the ledger’s automatic burn mechanism.
XRP Ledger’s Unique Burn Mechanism
The XRP Ledger distinguishes itself by permanently removing a minuscule amount of XRP with each transaction. These fees, paid for network activity, are not transferred to any wallet but are automatically burned. Unlike scheduled token burn programs in other blockchain ecosystems, the XRP Ledger’s mechanism operates autonomously.
To date, a cumulative 14,423,678 XRP has been burned, accounting for roughly 0.014% of the total supply. While the burn rate exerts marginal influence on supply, it serves as a critical indicator for monitoring network activity shifts.
Every transaction on the XRP Ledger requires a fee paid in XRP, which is permanently burned.
October’s Price Performance Falters
Traditionally seen as a strong month for the cryptocurrency market, October this year presented a contrasting narrative. XRP recorded a 15.86% decline as of the final hours of the month, marking its first negative month since July.
Previously, XRP advanced by 30.11% in August and 7.91% in September. Despite expectations for continued momentum, internal and external market developments dampened risk appetite, reversing the upward trajectory seen over the preceding months.
Market Pressures and Binance Incident
Contributing to the recent market pressures was a security incident involving Binance. The exchange disclosed a loss of $6.3 billion in client funds. Shortly after, Binance reported having recovered approximately 90% of the stolen assets and projected reopening withdrawal services by Sunday. As one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Binance’s challenges have significant market implications.
Binance announced it had recovered about 90% of the stolen crypto assets and plans to reopen withdrawals by Sunday.
Network Growth in the Third Quarter
Despite price pressures, XRP ecosystem indicators in the third quarter pointed to growth. The official XRP account revealed that stablecoin volumes on the XRP Ledger surged by 25.2%, reaching $1.03 billion. Global XRP ETP inflows increased by 39.6%, achieving $355.3 million in total.
During the same period, payment volume rose by 4.3%, attaining 42.82 billion XRP. Local decentralized exchange volume climbed by 20.2%, reaching $614.8 million. Additionally, the value of tokenized real-world assets distributed grew by 29.2% to $498.7 million. Notably, Aviva investors launched tokenized funds with BNY Mellon, marking a significant advance in this area.
