The XRP Ledger developers have achieved a significant milestone with the release of Rippled 2.0, introducing two impactful feature changes: the XLS-38 Cross-Chain Bridge and the XLS-40 Decentralized Identity (DID). These enhancements, along with fundamental fixes and various other improvements, aim to increase the functionality of the XRP Ledger.
The XLS-38 Cross-Chain Bridge offers a revolutionary feature that enables seamless transfer of XRP and other tokens issued on the XRPL between the XRPL Mainnet and Sidechains, facilitating movement with the planned Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) sidechain.
The XLS-40 Decentralized Identity (DID) provides users with complete control over their online identities in a self-sovereign manner. This system is designed to be interoperable with any distributed ledger or network, adhering to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard, allowing users to create secure, self-sovereign digital identities.
The Rippled 2.0 update also brings significant enhancements to the API. The introduction of API v2 focuses on improving user experience by removing old fields and methods, addressing naming inconsistencies, and increasing response consistency, facilitating more intuitive and efficient interaction with the XRP Ledger.
To add new features to the XRPL Mainnet, XLS specifications containing core protocol changes undergo a rigorous amendment procedure, requiring active participation from the validator community. The proposed changes need at least an 80% “yes” or “agree” vote from validators and must maintain this majority support for a minimum of two weeks to pass successfully.
Once these strict conditions are met, the approved changes will be implemented, seamlessly integrating the functions specified in the XLS standard into the XRPL Mainnet. This meticulous procedure ensures that each change undergoes a thorough verification and acceptance process before becoming an integral part of the XRP Ledger.
