A critical software vulnerability within XRP Ledger was resolved weeks ago with the rollout of version 3.4.1, with the public binaries released on September 25. The XRP Ledger Foundation confirmed that no new XRP was created as a result of the vulnerability, emphasizing that the total supply remains capped at 100 billion since its inception.
Supply Debates and Technical Details
The Foundation highlighted that the ledger’s data is fully transparent and the current circulating supply is approximately 99.986 billion XRP after accounting for transaction fees burnt. To exploit the vulnerability, hundreds of deliberately crafted transactions would have been needed, thus everyday payments were unlikely to encounter this flaw.
XRP Ledger Foundation stated that no new XRP was created, and the total supply remains anchored at 100 billion initially set, reducing to about 99.986 billion XRP due to transaction fees.
The core of the debate centered not on the technical impact but on the reward for reporting the vulnerability. Some community members argued that the reward was insufficient, suggesting that it might prompt malicious entities to exploit such vulnerabilities first and negotiate rewards later. Critics emphasized that given the potential consequences, a higher reward should have been provided.
Emergency Correction and Community Response
Typically, changes to the XRP Ledger undergo a prolonged polling process lasting several weeks among validators. In this instance, however, the team initiated an emergency fix, bypassing this usual step for the first time in over a decade. The Foundation argued that a public update detailing the vulnerability could guide attackers directly to it.
The Foundation warned that a public patch could reveal the vulnerability to attackers, and AI tools might accelerate the detection of such flaws.
The process witnessed consensus among network participants, RippleX, core developers, and validators on a collective strategy. Nonetheless, some users contended that the emergency intervention raised fresh doubts regarding the network’s decentralization claims.
Moving Forward with Security Enhancements
Certain users questioned the absence of an automatic kill-switch mechanism for such vulnerabilities, especially when dealing with the potential breach of supply limits. Additional protective layers against such risks were requested. As technical risks and sudden market fluctuations in the cryptocurrency space remain critical, tools designed for tracking real-time investor behavior are gaining traction.
In the meme token market, internet trends can swiftly attract millions of dollars in interest. For instance, according to Fomo’s data, a transaction in Niu Lai magnified an initial $99 investment to approximately $370,000, showcasing such rapid shifts. Monitoring not only prices but also the timing and tokens associated with investments remains crucial. The Fomo App stands out by integrating token discovery and trading, tracking social flow, investor rankings, and trade alerts.
The Foundation extended gratitude to Cayden Liao and Veria AI for responsibly reporting the vulnerability, and committed to enhancing testing processes and launching a more extensive bug bounty program. However, whether this resolves the reward-related debate in the community anytime soon remains uncertain.
