Zcash Developers to Enhance Network with Quantum-Resistant Signatures

Zcash developers are orchestrating a strategic move to fortify the network’s public transaction module against quantum computing threats. The initiative envisions integrating hash-based quantum-resistant signature commands into the software by January. However, the timeline for its activation across the network remains unspecified.

Focus on Transparent Payments

The Zcash network supports two types of transactions. While shielded transactions obscure details such as sender, recipient, and amount, transparent transactions remain visible on the blockchain, akin to Bitcoin‘s operation. As of Thursday, about 11.96 million of the 16.98 million ZEC in circulation were lodged within the transparent pool, encapsulating nearly seven out of every ten coins under the new plan’s umbrella.

Developers aim to mitigate risks where a wallet owner’s consent might be replicated through retrospective calculations based on currently used public keys. The new protocol will validate payment authorizations via hash structures, reducing vulnerability, even if current wallet keys are compromised.

“Our team plans to integrate post-quantum signature commands into Zcash by January,” stated Roman Akhtariev from the Zakura engineering team.

Zakura distinguishes itself as a critical software underpinning the Zcash network’s operation and transaction validation. Thus, the proposed modifications are intrinsically linked to security measures at a protocol level.

Wallet Tool to Conceal Address Links

The initiative extends beyond merely signature structures. The Zakura team has also developed a specialized query tool designed to prevent wallet addresses from being disclosed to a server during balance inquiries. This experimental function is accessible through the “Private queries” setting in the Vizor wallet.

Typically, even if an individual spreads their holdings across multiple addresses, querying these balances usually involves contacting a server. This can inadvertently reveal linkages between seemingly unrelated addresses belonging to the same user. The new tool employs a private information retrieval method, enabling users to obtain responses without exposing which database records are being accessed.

Quantum Concerns Resurface in Market Discussions

Zakura’s announcement came on the heels of a stark warning from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake. Highlighting worst-case scenarios, Drake argued that advancements in AI and quantum domains could challenge the mathematical underpinnings protecting Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets sooner than anticipated, urging stakeholders to prepare for a “bunker mode.”

Drake forewarned that such vulnerabilities could surface “not in years, but within months,” in dire scenarios.

Ethereum targets transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography by December 2029. Despite this strategic foresight, no practical attack on wallet keys has been publicized to date. On the Zcash front, distinct efforts will be needed for shielded transactions, as future mathematical breakthroughs could potentially unravel the encryption of past transaction records.

In market movements, ZEC concluded Thursday trading at approximately $1,185, reflecting an 11% decline compared to the previous week. This trajectory coincided with a broader downturn among major cryptocurrencies, which followed Justin Drake’s widely observed commentary on the X platform.
