The Algorand Foundation recently unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance its blockchain with quantum resistance by the end of 2027. As the potential threat of quantum computing to current cryptographic protections gains attention, Algorand is taking proactive steps to safeguard its network.
What’s the Initial Timeline?
Algorand has mapped out that the shift towards quantum-resistant infrastructure will begin in 2026. During this phase, significant upgrades will include introducing quantum post accounts, enabling multi-signature wallets, and supporting staking with quantum-resistant protocols. These advancements aim to protect key components of the network.
“Migrating a live protocol takes years, and as we approach the end of this decade, the chances of quantum attacks on old encryption methods will substantially increase,” remarked Chris Peikert, Chief Scientist at Algorand Foundation.
Peikert also stressed that these changes require substantial time to implement. The Foundation began laying the groundwork back in 2022, aiming for full quantum resistance across Algorand’s network by 2027’s end.
How Are Others Preparing?
Most current blockchain security systems rely on elliptic curve cryptography, which experts warn could eventually be compromised by quantum computers. Although these powerful machines are not yet a threat, institutions and tech companies are actively planning for future technology shifts.
Notably, Google urges companies to ready their systems for the quantum era and has embraced quantum-safe measures, intending full adaptation by 2029. Meanwhile, NIST is working on establishing post-quantum encryption standards.

Both Ethereum and Solana networks are advancing their quantum readiness strategies. Ethereum introduced research initiatives aimed at transitioning crypto assets to quantum-secured environments. Similarly, Solana developers have devised plans to transition user data and network protocols to withstand quantum analyses.
