XRP-linked exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the U.S. market have seen an extraordinary price divergence, outpacing the token‘s gains by nearly twice during intraday trading. While XRP‘s price increased by approximately 7% to 8% over the last 24 hours, some regulated funds experienced share gains within the range of 16% to 17%.
What Caused the Price Divergence?
This unusual scenario began attracting attention from CryptoQuant analyst Xaif_Crypto. During the session, all seven spot XRP ETFs trading in the U.S. reported positive increments, with an impressive interim trading volume of $19.7 million. CryptoQuant, known for its analysis of on-chain data and market flows, has become a go-to platform for such insights.
How Did Liquidity Imbalances Affect Prices?
The divergence appears to stem from localized supply and demand disruptions in U.S. exchange order books. Sharp movements in base assets can lead to temporary shortages of sellers, particularly in lower liquidity funds. This situation inflated ETF share prices, allowing them to trade significantly above the underlying asset’s net asset value.
ETF shares gained traction in the market, partly due to liquidity imbalances. While some funds, like Bitwise’s and Franklin Templeton’s, closely mirrored spot price movements, others such as Grayscale’s demonstrated elevated gains. Notably, Grayscale’s XXRP and other related shares exceeded a 17% increase.
CryptoQuant analyst Xaif_Crypto observed, “A temporary shortage of sellers in low-liquidity funds caused ETF shares to rise above their net asset value, significantly surpassing the daily growth of the underlying asset.”
Despite this rampant price climb, no new capital inflow was seen within funds. SoSoValue highlighted a net outflow of $7.20 million on the previous trading day, concentrating mainly on Bitwise’s funds. Not one of the other issuers recorded any net inflow.
- Total daily trading volume for ETFs stood at $27.22 million.
- XRP ETF assets reached $1.42 billion, reflecting 1.67% of XRP’s market capitalization.
- Cumulative net inflows have exceeded $1.68 billion since their marketplace inception.
The swift movement in ETF shares heralds a new dynamic where derivative financial products could temporarily influence base asset pricing faster. This shift hints that U.S. exchanges may gain more control over short-term price directions in the XRP market.
