David Schwartz, Ripple‘s former Chief Technology Officer, recently unraveled the mystery behind the T-shirt he donned at the Swell event, a topic that had intrigued the XRP community for some time. The shirt displayed the number “100,” sparking speculation about its significance. However, Schwartz clarified that this figure was not related to XRP’s price but was instead a nod to a significant technical milestone achieved by the XRP Ledger (XRPL).
Commemorating XRPL’s Performance Leap
In a response on the X platform, Schwartz explained that the T-shirt was created to celebrate XRPL’s capacity to handle 100 transactions per second (TPS), a noteworthy achievement for Ripple’s blockchain infrastructure, which is primarily recognized for its cross-border payment capabilities. He recounted that when the T-shirt was ordered, XRP was valued at approximately $0.30, while it had risen to $1 by the time the shirt was delivered.
David Schwartz noted, “The T-shirt was made to celebrate XRPL achieving 100 TPS, and at the time of order, XRP was around $0.30, reaching $1 by delivery.”
This timing coincidentally led to a different interpretation within the community. The “100” on the shirt was perceived by some as a reference to XRP’s price reaching $1, a misconception that was briefly embraced by Schwartz and others.
Schwartz commented, “Many believed the ‘100’ referred to XRP reaching $1, and we went along with this interpretation for a while.”
Timeline Details Remain Vague
Schwartz did not provide specifics regarding when exactly the T-shirt was made, limiting precise date analysis. Given XRP’s historical trading around $0.30 at various times, pinpointing the timeline solely based on price is challenging. However, historical data on XRPL’s transaction capabilities can assist in estimating the period.
When XRPL’s performance tests began in February 2015, the system consistently maintained about 80 TPS. Gradual enhancements between March and June 2015 elevated the sustainable transaction rate to between 120 and 490 TPS, which further increased to 525 TPS by October 2015. By the following year, this figure had nearly doubled, reaching 1,100 TPS.
XRPL’s Continued Capacity Growth
By July 2017, XRPL demonstrated its ability to sustain a transaction capacity of 1,500 TPS, a performance level that has been maintained to date. This timeline serves as evidence that the “100” on Schwartz’s T-shirt likely symbolizes the ledger’s early technical progress rather than a price target.
Today, XRPL’s sustained ability to manage a high volume of transactions per second underscores the network’s robust development over the years, characterizing the number “100” as emblematic of a foundational technical achievement rather than a speculative fiscal ambition.
