Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States recorded a net inflow of $526.64 million on October 19, signaling a renewed interest among traders. This marked the end of a two-week streak of outflows, where approximately $229 million exited Bitcoin ETFs. Market analysts have now turned their focus to a potential price breakout, especially as Bitcoin’s Bollinger Bands tighten to levels not seen in two and a half years.

BlackRock Dominates ETF Inflows

Data shared by analyst Trader T on October 20 revealed that all inflows among the 12 U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs were concentrated in BlackRock’s IBIT fund, which alone attracted $665.2 million. Meanwhile, Fidelity’s FBTC fund saw an outflow of $83.63 million, and Grayscale’s GBTC fund lost $54.93 million. Other funds recorded neither significant inflows nor outflows.

Bitwise’s Head of Research, Ryan Rasmussen, noted that despite the recent fluctuations, the third quarter saw a total of $6.4 billion in net inflows into these funds. This positive momentum contrasts sharply with the prior weeks’ trend, bringing cautious optimism to the market.

Price Convergence Raises Market Speculation

According to Barchart, Bitcoin’s daily Bollinger Bands have narrowed significantly, reaching their most constrained state in over two years. This technical pattern often precedes substantial price movements, though it offers no definitive indication of direction.

Bollinger Bands, which are derived from a 20-day simple moving average and two standard deviations, have historically been followed by abrupt price actions. However, whether the upcoming movement will be upward or downward remains uncertain.

Amid this backdrop of consolidation, JPMorgan Asset Management’s October 19 report took a long-term view. For the first time, the institution included Bitcoin in its long-term return assumptions, projecting a 10% annualized return over the next 10 to 15 years.

Similarly, the report estimated a 7.5% return for large-cap U.S. equities, 5.5% for gold, and 8.2% for U.S. real estate investment trusts. Bitcoin’s average annual return was forecasted at 20.9%, though accompanied by an elevated annualized volatility of 55%.

Bitwise’s Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, indicated that such a forecast suggests a shift in how traditional financial institutions are assessing the potential of crypto assets. This re-evaluation underscores Bitcoin’s growing integration within mainstream financial projections.

Despite the promising ETF inflows, the pace of Bitcoin acquisitions by corporations has slowed dramatically this quarter. MicroStrategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, reduced its net purchases from 83,901 BTC in Q2 to just 1,666 BTC in Q3. Similarly, other public companies’ total net acquisitions plummeted from 45,725 BTC to 5,617 BTC.

Ryan Rasmussen speculated that corporate Bitcoin purchasing could revive towards the year’s end if prices rebound, though capital is expected to be concentrated in companies with robust balance sheets.

Jag Kooner, Head of Derivatives at Bitfinex, noted that the resurgence of corporate buying hinges on Bitcoin holdings trading at a premium. Such a premium would allow companies to issue new shares and raise capital without diluting existing stockholders’ Bitcoin share per count.

Kooner cautioned that a repeat of last year’s widespread capital influx is unlikely. Investors are now more discerning, evaluating companies based on financing costs, financial health, and Bitcoin per share metrics. Although a price increase could ignite renewed purchasing, it won’t necessarily trigger a similarly large-scale capital inflow.

Even if corporate acquisitions remain muted, the surge in spot ETF interest could lend support to Bitcoin prices. Kooner warned that the market might grow increasingly dependent on institutional investors who adjust portfolio allocations based on macroeconomic conditions. ETF inflows alone may not suffice to sustain a robust market recovery.
