In response to unexpectedly high U.S. producer inflation, Bitcoin and gold initially suffered significant declines before rebounding in the early evening, Eastern Time. Following an initial dip below $80,000, Bitcoin surged back to approximately $81,800. Concurrently, gold rallied to $4,170 an ounce after slipping below the $4,100 mark, suggesting an improving sentiment among investors.
Inflation Data Sparks Initial Investor Sell-off
The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) revealed figures at 15:30 Eastern Time that surpassed market expectations, signaling sustained inflationary pressures. This report led to a surge in the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, while stock futures experienced downturns. The robust increase in producer prices heightened concerns that the Federal Reserve might maintain a stringent monetary policy stance.
“This pricing action pressured Bitcoin through risk aversion. The anticipation of higher interest rates makes it challenging for investors to pivot towards risky assets like cryptocurrencies, exacerbated by accelerated sell-offs in AI-linked stocks,” the report noted.
Gold’s initial drop was primarily influenced by the strengthening dollar and soaring bond yields. A more expensive dollar renders gold pricier for investors using other currencies, while rising yields diminish the attraction of this non-yielding precious metal.
Factors Behind the Post-5 PM Recovery
Later in the day, a weakening dollar and declining U.S. Treasury yields helped mitigate earlier selling pressure. Reports from Reuters attributed gold’s revival to these developments, despite ongoing negative inflation data. This environment provided a window for prices to ascend anew.
“Significant announcements emerged from the energy sector as well. The International Energy Agency (IEA) disclosed an agreement to expedite the release of the remaining 100 million barrels of emergency stock, including over 20 million barrels of diesel to be made available swiftly,” according to the IEA statement.
Efforts to increase energy supply could alleviate inflationary pressures emanating from oil, partially counterbalancing interest rate concerns for Bitcoin. Although the timing of these announcements coincided with the recovery, it’s uncertain if they directly spurred Bitcoin’s rise.
Gold benefitted from persistent geopolitical risks. Warnings from the Houthis regarding Saudi Arabian airspace and airports, reports of attacks near Yemen’s presidential palace in Aden, and Iranian state media announcing a tanker fire near the Strait of Hormuz all provided support for the safe-haven demand.
Business inventory figures released at 17:00 Eastern Time, showing a month-over-month alignment with expectations at 0.4%, failed to deliver a strong market surprise. The current scenario indicates a reduction in the initial sell-off pressure on Bitcoin and a recovery in gold driven by the dollar’s retreat and augmented by geopolitical uncertainties.
