Recently, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano and CEO of Input Output, responded firmly against the persistent “ETHgate” conspiracy theories circulating within the XRP community. Dismissing accusations of collusion with Ethereum affiliates to sideline XRP, he refuted involvement in any clandestine actions aimed at Ripple.
Is ETHgate More Than Just A Theory?
In XRP circles, “ETHgate” encapsulates allegations that Ethereum-associated individuals manipulated U.S. regulators before the SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple in 2020. The theory suggests Ethereum pressured regulators to disadvantage XRP unfairly. Online discussions have speculated on Hoskinson’s alleged secret collaboration with Ethereum to orchestrate this alleged crackdown.
Hoskinson, denying these claims, highlighted his past: having been part of Ethereum’s founding team, he exited the project following a challenging breakup in 2014 to create Cardano. Reflecting on the ongoing disputes, he asserted:
“I left Ethereum in June 2014 and for twelve years since, they treated me rather harshly. Now I’m being accused of collaborating with them to undermine XRP years later? That’s impossible.”
Can Past Tensions Between XRP Community and Hoskinson Be Resolved?
After the SEC took legal action against Ripple, claims regarding Ethereum’s alleged influence escalated on platforms like X (Twitter). Hoskinson persistently rejected any notion of involvement in coordinated efforts or bribery activities, underscoring the lack of credible evidence for such allegations.
At times, Hoskinson’s remarks ignited significant discord with XRP community members, prompting vehement exchanges, particularly during 2022 and 2023. He described certain XRP enthusiasts as “toxic” and “vicious” and distanced himself from discussions on XRP, Ripple, or the ongoing SEC legal challenge.
Despite these issues, interactions between Cardano and Ripple’s leadership have warmed in recent times. In 2024, Hoskinson initiated discussions with Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse and CTO David Schwartz, aiming to mend fences and foster collaboration. However, the ETHgate theory persists, continually reemerging in social media dialogues.
Although dialogues at an institutional level show promise, grassroots reconciliation remains challenging. The active presence of online exchanges indicates unresolved tensions linger within these communities.
Charles Hoskinson’s unequivocal rejection of ETHgate claims, alongside ongoing collaborative efforts with Ripple’s leadership, suggests a hopeful trajectory for future relations between Cardano and Ripple. Yet, entrenched skepticism and past frictions among members hint that the narrative will persist in public debates for the foreseeable future.
