With the decline in oil prices, U.S. stock futures, cryptocurrencies, gold, and bond futures witnessed a significant rise. Investors focused on the resilience of oil flows in the Middle East, despite recent attacks on Saudi Arabia raising the risk of heightened tensions in the region. S&P 500 futures advanced by 0.3% while European stock futures gained 0.6%.

Asian Markets Diverge; South Korea Stocks Fall

In contrast, Asian markets did not follow the same upward trend. After the long weekend, South Korean stocks fell by 3%, leading to a 0.2% decline in MSCI’s regional equity index. This indicates a bifurcation in market sentiments between Western and Eastern economies.

Brent crude, which spiked to $105.63 following Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s main airport over the weekend, later receded by 1.2% to settle at $103.43 per barrel. The balancing act between regional supply continuity and geopolitical tensions in the oil market was highlighted by the U.S. statement that Russia and Ukraine had reportedly reached a limited ceasefire over energy concerns.

Gold Extends Gains, Eyes on U.S. Inflation

Gold prices continued their ascent for the third consecutive trading day, hovering around $4,200 per ounce. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury futures recorded slight gains, accompanied by positive movements in Australian and New Zealand government bonds. Global trading of U.S. Treasury securities took a pause due to the U.S. holiday on Monday.

The European Union concluded trade negotiations with China, resulting in a 16-point agreement including significant sectors like investment and intellectual property rights. The EU secured China’s commitment to substantially reduce hybrid car exports. Sources familiar with the discussions revealed the EU’s plans to impose measures aimed at limiting imports.

Attention is now shifting towards upcoming U.S. consumer price data and a scheduled address by Federal Reserve Chair Warsh. Both developments are anticipated to offer fresh insights into the trajectory of inflation and the potential pace of additional interest rate hikes.
