The XRP Ledger Foundation has justified its decision to release an emergency security update without waiting for the standard protocol amendment process. The organization cited a detected vulnerability that could potentially allow malicious actors to create trillions of XRP, although it clarified that this flaw had never been exploited on the public network.
Scope of the Flaw and Risk Assessment
The Foundation confirmed that the bug posed a threat to surpass the fixed supply cap of the XRP Ledger. However, it stressed that no unauthorized creation of XRP had occurred, highlighting that all XRP balances are publicly accessible. Should any anomaly in production occur, it would be transparently visible in the ledger data.
AI-enabled security firm Veria Labs identified the weakness within the XRP Ledger’s payment engine, suggesting the flaw may have existed since 2015. Researchers calculated that exploiting the vulnerability could result in the issuance of approximately 18.45 trillion XRP in a single transaction—approximately 180 times the original supply of XRP.
The XRP Ledger Foundation stated that no unauthorized issuance of XRP has occurred, network supply is continuously monitored, and data is verified by community members.
Rationale for Deviating from Standard Procedures
Typically, changes to the XRP Ledger protocol require approval from over 80% of trusted validators for two consecutive weeks. The Foundation, however, argued that this method would provide attackers with a window of opportunity that could last weeks before the patch was implemented.
Considering the accelerated reverse engineering capabilities enabled by AI tools, developers concluded that a swift software update was essential. Consequently, a coordinated emergency response was orchestrated among the XRP Ledger Foundation, RippleX, core developers, and validators.
The organization emphasized that no single individual or party could compel network participants to adopt this update, underscoring that the process advanced solely based on validators’ decisions.
Details on the Deployment of the Patch
On September 25th, updated software was distributed to validators, and public binary files were released the same day. While the Foundation acknowledged this approach diverged from standard procedures, it defended the action by claiming that any delay posed a potentially greater threat due to the nature of the security risk.
As the crypto market closely monitors infrastructure security developments, there is a growing awareness among market participants to focus not just on price movements but technical signals at the network level. A trend, if it captivates online interest, can swiftly translate into multimillion-dollar engagement. Data from Fomo highlights a striking example of this, where an initial $99 investment in Niu Lai escalated to approximately $370,000. Tracking not only prices but when and where transactions occur proves pivotal in this context. The Fomo App integrates token discovery and trading with social flow, leaderboards, and transaction notifications, offering a comprehensive view of the meme token landscape.
The Foundation also noted that network supply is routinely monitored, with community oversight providing an additional layer of assurance. This assertion directly counters recent allegations regarding unauthorized token issuance.
