Ripple has announced a significant extension to its Ripple Prime brokerage service, permitting institutional clients to engage in stock trading at any time. This new offer will allow the use of Ripple’s stablecoin, RLUSD, as collateral within these transactions, aimed at enhancing the flexibility of institutional trading strategies.

Broader Use Cases for RLUSD

The San Francisco-based blockchain firm is increasingly focusing on institutional products, with the latest development allowing Ripple Prime clients to perform stock trades every day of the week. Moreover, they can utilize Ripple USD, or RLUSD, to secure open positions, extending the stablecoin’s function beyond just payment and treasury operations.

This move signifies a shift where RLUSD becomes more than a mere conduit of value transfer, growing into a pivotal element in corporate transactions and finance operations.

Ripple declared that corporate clients could perform seamless stock trading through Ripple Prime, using RLUSD as collateral for these deals.

Redefining Institutional Operations

The initiative aims to offer institutions greater flexibility in managing trading positions, enabling them to mobilize capital more efficiently without total reliance on traditional banking channels. Such a model could cater as an appealing option for major investors unwilling to be confined to conventional trading hours.

Operating as a prime brokerage platform, Ripple Prime integrates transaction, custody, and collateral management services under one roof, with RLUSD’s integration marking a notable step in linking the stablecoin with institutional market infrastructure.

Liquidity Challenges Persist

Nevertheless, a critical hurdle lies ahead for the 24/7 stock markets. Market participants caution about limited liquidity in these next-generation perpetual trading arenas. The scarcity of buyers and sellers during off-peak hours raises the risk of large orders dramatically affecting prices.

This scenario presents a particular concern for institutional investors, as executing large-scale trades efficiently necessitates sufficient counterparty presence at all times. Otherwise, price slippage risks increase, raising transactional costs.

The vulnerability of significant orders to cause abrupt price movements during low-liquidity hours could complicate the widespread adoption of 24/7 stock trading.

Ripple’s latest initiative marks a strategic advance in expanding RLUSD’s corporate application, yet the adoption level will heavily depend on these markets’ depth. The intensity of institutional engagement with the system will hinge on whether continuous market settings foster adequate liquidity.
