Ripple‘s engineering director, Viijay Khanna, has confirmed ambitious performance enhancements for the XRP Ledger, set to be implemented by 2027. The disclosure comes amid debates over the network’s current capacity to handle approximately 1,500 transactions per second (TPS), a number some critics contend falls short when compared to payment giants like Visa, questioning if XRP Ledger merely mimics older payment systems.
Reimagining Transaction Processing
Khanna emphasized that the focus of the enhancements is not narrowly on TPS figures. Ripple’s engineering team advocates that the core layer of XRP Ledger need not handle millions of small transactions directly. Instead, they propose shifting the burden of dense microtransaction traffic to second-layer solutions like Dassie and Interledger. This strategic shift could free the primary network to handle high-value transactions from banks and institutions.
Khanna revealed plans for significant performance upgrades slated for 2027, affirming the core layer’s role in addressing high-volume institutional use cases.
Ripple, known for developing blockchain-based financial infrastructures, operates the open-source XRP Ledger, a platform gaining traction for payments, asset transfers, and institutional applications.
Optimizing Resource Efficiency
A notable step in this transformation is the recent release of xrpld version 3.3.0, which reduced node RAM usage by 13-23%. Technical analyses attribute the efficiency improvement to fixing memory allocation mechanisms rather than code bugs. Previously, excess resource retention post-cache cleaning inflated infrastructure costs. The update promises notable reductions in validators’ operating expenses.
To further enhance operational environments, the fixCleanup package was deployed on November 4th. This initiative is expected to optimize resource usage and stabilize network performance during periods of high activity.
A Comprehensive Vision for Institutional Adoption
Beyond addressing critiques, Khanna’s announcement signals a strategic reshaping of the ecosystem to attract commercial banks and large financial entities. Ripple President Monica Long has previously unveiled plans for clients to route a significant share of their payments via the XRP Ledger, integrating cross-border transfers with new credit infrastructures.
The 2027 roadmap highlights XRP Ledger’s evolution from merely a payment network to a foundational framework for tokenized assets and interbank credit transactions.
The XRP Ledger Foundation’s outlined roadmap includes 24 significant developments backed by a $5.774 million budget for enhancements and oversight. Proposals encompass WebAssembly-based native smart contracts, credit pools, options, and tokenized assets as collateral in interbank repo markets. Addressing the high CPU demands of native DEX route-finding processes also forms a key focus area.
This restructuring anticipates future institutional transaction volumes, preparing the Ripple ecosystem to support everyday operations rather than merely trial phases for RLUSD transactions, tokenized equity trading, and interbank credit flows. The technical team leverages AI-driven testing and optimization tools to refine the infrastructure for this anticipated scale of use.
