What Drives Strategy’s Bitcoin Rush? How Is Strategy Funding Its Bitcoin Ambitions?

The American tech firm, Strategy, well-known for its risk management solutions and big data analytics, has intensified its Bitcoin acquisition efforts. For the first time, however, the company is contemplating the sale of some Bitcoin from its considerable holdings to fulfill dividend commitments. Michael Saylor, the company’s founder and chairman, has been at the forefront of institutional Bitcoin investments, gaining substantial attention.

What Drives Strategy’s Bitcoin Rush?

In 2026, Strategy’s pace of buying Bitcoin has been unprecedented. From the beginning of the year, the firm has added a staggering 145,834 BTC to its portfolio, valued at approximately $11 billion. These acquisitions were made while the cryptocurrency traded below $75,000.

JPMorgan estimates that Strategy’s Bitcoin acquisitions could climb to nearly $30 billion this year. Compared to the $22 billion acquired over the last two years, this represents a significant leap, positioning Strategy as a dominant force in the Bitcoin market.

How Is Strategy Funding Its Bitcoin Ambitions?

To support its Bitcoin buying spree, Strategy introduced STRC, a perpetual preferred stock offering an 11.5 percent dividend yield. Yet, this comes with a substantial annual payout of 2.2 percent of its Bitcoin stock, amounting to $1.5 billion.

Acknowledging this challenge, Michael Saylor hinted that the firm might sell some Bitcoin to meet these dividend obligations, for the first time considering asset sales as a strategic option.

Via social media, Michael Saylor explained that Strategy is adopting a “buy more than you sell” approach, aiming to purchase enough Bitcoin through STRC and new equity issuances to more than offset any coins potentially sold for dividend payouts.

This strategy allows Strategy to buy Bitcoin without impacting traditional shareholders. The STRC’s nominal market value currently exceeds $8.5 billion.

● TD Cowen analysts, impressed by the efficiency of this funding strategy, raised their stock price target to $395—a 110 percent increase from the previous closing price.
● The predicted Bitcoin yield for Strategy in 2026 is now 18.2 percent and 9.6 percent in 2027.
● Bitcoin is expected to reach $140,000, with a bullish scenario setting the target at $175,000 by year-end.

JPMorgan observes sustained interest from both retail and institutional investors, raising questions about the sustainability of Strategy’s Bitcoin purchasing pace and Bitcoin’s alignment to TD Cowen’s price targets.

If Bitcoin prices and share premiums rise, MSTR stock could enhance its leverage. Conversely, if they decline, managing dividend payouts could become complex, making the $395 target harder to achieve.
