Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat, has issued a cautionary note regarding Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. He suggests that the pronounced downturn in South Korea’s equity markets might exert additional selling pressure on crypto assets, with Ethereum potentially bearing the brunt of this impact.

Ripple Effects from South Korean Market Turmoil

In a recent social media post, Lee observed that the severe equity selloffs in South Korea could be seeping into the cryptocurrency market. Highlighting the significant stake South Korean investors hold in crypto assets, Lee warned that margin calls by brokers could cultivate a broader financial contagion risk.

Tom Lee emphasized the potential for the massive decline in South Korean stocks to ripple through to the cryptocurrency markets, hinting at short-term pressures on Ethereum.

Lee’s warning suggests a potentially painful period in the near-term outlook. Specifically turning his focus toward ETH, Lee noted that coerced liquidations might exacerbate market vulnerability within the crypto sector.

KOSPI Plummet Prompts Emergency Measures

On Tuesday, October 13th, South Korea’s benchmark index KOSPI plummeted over 6%. Pivotal to this downfall were aggressive selloffs in tech and semiconductor stocks. In response to intensifying market turbulence, the Korea Exchange enacted emergency measures aimed at stabilizing markets.

At around 09:48 local time, with KOSPI 200 futures dropping over 5%, the exchange activated the sell sidecar mechanism. This tool is designed to momentarily decelerate trading when faced with extreme volatility.

Mini Glossary: Sidecar is a temporary stabilizing mechanism used in South Korean markets during drastic price movements. Its aim is to curb the speed of abrupt selloffs and limit excessive volatility in trades.

The Korea Exchange employed the sidecar system following a drop exceeding 5% in KOSPI 200 futures, yet the measure fell short of halting broader selloffs.

Global Semiconductor Concerns Intensify

At the core of the South Korean market’s pressure were growing doubts about the artificial intelligence wave and the competitive edge of the nation’s leading semiconductor firms. The selloff heavily impacted shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, both major players on the country’s stock exchange.

Concerns escalated when it emerged that Chinese memory chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies had made significant strides in semiconductor technology. This development poses downward risks on memory chip prices and profit margins, prompting close scrutiny.

The selling pressure was not confined to South Korea alone. Semiconductor stocks in the U.S. also saw sharp declines, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropping 2.67% in the latest session. This scenario underscores the broader spread of stress affecting technology and chip sectors worldwide.
